Here I am to tell you a little about the second lesson of the illustration course I'm following, held by Damiano Bellino.
The theme of this lesson was how to characterize your character, making him more interesting; the concept key is that we have to add to the illustration something that comes from our personal life, or to render the illustration in a style similar to other artists's styles. So: if your character wears a hat, paint one of your hats precisely as it is, or paint your hat in the same way Vincent Van Gogh painted his hat in his selfportrait.

The character that we all had to develop during the lesson was LITTLE RED HOOD.

First of all, we begun with quick sketches; the first two were totaly invented, but the third one was inspired by Lisbeth Zwerger.

Next step was to take inspiration from an artist of our choice. Between all the books available I chose Escher (I'm a bit masochist...). After a moment of panic, I draw my Escher-ish Little Red Hood.

Seconda versione, sempre in stile Escher:
Second Escher-ish version

After Escher, I had the urge to change style! Then I chose Mucha, which I liked much more. The above is my Little Red Hood à la Mucha.

Next step was to choose a specific historic period, search for the tipical dresses and use them for our Little Red Hood. After searching in the internet I chose the American pioneers dresses.

E io recidiva ho ripreso in mano Escher!

Next step was to insert in our character another detail taken from another artist. And me, again, I took Escher. I tryed to draw some wolves fit together like Escher does, but the only thing I could achieve was the sequence of wolves you can see two pictures above; then I added it to Little Red Hood's shirt.

In the end, we had to sum up all the research of the day. I chose the hat à la Mucha, the pioneers shirt and Escher's wolf. Above you can see my final image; I didn't have the time to paint it, I'll do it as soon as possible and I'll post it.

Ciao!
